Turn On All Interior Lights Before the Photo Session
Lighting plays a big role in how a home feels — both in person and in photographs. While professional photographers use their own lighting equipment, having all interior lights turned on before the session begins helps create a balanced, inviting look that enhances the final images.
Why Lights Should Be On
Turning on all the home’s light fixtures adds warmth to the space and ensures consistency between rooms. Even if the photographer uses flash or additional lighting, the home’s existing lights help fill in darker corners and soften shadows, especially in larger or naturally dim areas.
Which Lights to Turn On
Be sure all ceiling lights, pendant lights, chandeliers, and wall sconces are on. This includes lights in hallways, closets, bathrooms, and staircases. If the light fixture has multiple bulbs, check that all of them are working and match in color (avoid mixing warm and cool bulbs).
Lamps Are Not Necessary
Lamps are not required for lighting purposes during the photo shoot and may be turned off unless specifically styled for décor. The focus is on the overall room, not on the furniture or accent lighting. Keeping the main light fixtures on is enough to set the tone for the session.
Replace Burned-Out Bulbs in Advance
Before the appointment, walk through the home and replace any bulbs that are missing or burned out. Mismatched lighting (some fixtures on, others off) can be distracting and uneven in photos. A consistent, well-lit environment looks more polished and professional.
By turning on all the main light fixtures before the photo session begins, you help create a warm, cohesive look that complements the photographer’s work and helps the home shine in every shot.
